Trendivox: The New York Yankees have eliminated the Boston Red Sox from the MLB postseason for the second consecutive year, completing a dominant sweep in the American League Wild Card Series.
New York won Game 2 by 9-2 at Yankee Stadium on September 30, following a 9-0 victory in the opening game. Across the two-game series, the Yankees outscored Boston 18-2, ending the Red Sox's postseason run in convincing fashion.
The Yankees received major contributions from several of their younger, homegrown players, including Ben Rice, Cam Schlittler, George Lombard Jr., Spencer Jones, Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe and Will Warren. Their performances helped New York overcome the absence of some of its biggest stars.
Aaron Judge was unavailable while recovering from a calf injury, while Giancarlo Stanton was on the postseason roster as a potential pinch hitter but did not receive an at-bat. Despite those absences, New York's offense remained productive throughout the series.
Game 2 remained close through the early innings. Luis García Jr. gave the Yankees the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning, while Cody Bellinger added an RBI single in the fifth. Boston briefly responded when Willson Contreras hit a solo home run in the sixth.
The Yankees then broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth. George Lombard Jr. drove in a run before Austin Wells and Ryan McMahon added more runs. Bellinger delivered the biggest blow with a three-run home run, giving New York a commanding advantage.
Pitcher Max Fried also played a key role, working six innings and allowing one earned run while striking out six. Sonny Gray started for Boston and worked 4⅔ innings.
With the Wild Card Series complete, the Yankees advance to the American League Division Series, where they will face the Tampa Bay Rays. Game 1 is scheduled for October 3.
The Yankees will now look to carry their strong Wild Card performance into the next round as their postseason journey continues.
